Test insulating oils to avoid downtime

Recommendations for transformer oil

Insulating oil ensures the safe operation of power transformers. The ageing process of these oils is influenced by oxidation, thermal stress and contact with other materials and plays a key role in determining the service life of the transformer.

Failure to test these insulating oils can lead to failures. The video demonstrates the severe consequences of failing to test the oils. To avoid such accidents, there are a number of recommendations regarding when the insulating oils should be checked:

Transformers: Nominal voltage > 400 kV
Transformers: Nominal voltage > 170 kV and < 400 kV
Transformers: Nominal voltage > 72.5 kV und < 170 kV
Transformers: Medium- and low-voltage application < 72.5 kV

Routine inspection

Every 1 - 2 years

Every 1 - 3 years

Every 1 - 4 years

Every 2 - 6 years
